Voting Information

All residents of the City of Dawsonville who are registered voters have the ability to elect the Mayor and city council members, or to vote on special referendums that affect city. Please note that simply having a Dawsonville mailing address does not necessarily entitle you to vote in the municipal elections: Only residents within city limits are eligible. If you are unsure of your status, contact City Hall at (706) 265-3256 for verification.

City (municipal) elections are conducted and held in accordance with Georgia State law and City Charter and are generally held in odd years. Dawsonville has an intergovernmental agreement for Dawson County Board of Elections and Voter Registration to conduct the municipal elections.

To Register to Vote in Georgia

  • The last day to register for any election is 30 days prior to that election.
  • Any mail-in applications must be postmarked by 30 days prior to that election.
  • If you have moved, you must notify the registrar 30 days prior to any election.
  • If you are not sure if you are registered, please call (706) 265-3640.
  • If you have moved to another county, you must re-register in that county, using the official registration form.
  • Register to vote when you get your driver's license.
  • Register at the Dawson County Library when you apply for a library card.
  • Pick up an application at City Hall or the Post Office.
  • Pick up an application in person at the Board of Elections and Registration Office.

Voter Identification Requirements

One form of ID from the list below must be presented when you go to vote. If you have none of the IDs listed below, you may acquire a free voter photo ID at the Board of Elections and Registration Office.

Acceptable Forms of ID

  • A Georgia driver's license, even if expired.
  • A valid state or federal government issued photo ID, including one issued by the Department of Driver Services or your county registrar's office.
  • Valid U.S. passport.
  • Valid employee photo ID from any branch, department, agency or entity of the U.S. Government, Georgia, or any county, municipality, board, authority, or other entity of this state.
  • Valid U.S. military photo ID.
  • Valid tribal photo ID.

Once I have registered, where do I vote?

After the county receives your voter registration form, you will receive a precinct card in the mail, which will state the location of your polling place and your local, State, and Federal districts. If you do not receive your precinct card within 30 days, contact the voter registration office at (706) 344-3640.

On Election Day registered voters may only vote at their specific polling location. Your particular polling place is determined by the county precinct in which you live. That, of course, is determined by the street address that you list as your place of residence on your registration application.

What is Advance Voting?

There shall be a period of advance voting that shall commence on the fourth Monday immediately prior to each primary or election and as soon as possible prior to a runoff and shall end on the Friday immediately prior to each primary, election, or runoff. Voting shall be conducted during normal business hours on weekdays during such period and shall be conducted on the second Saturday prior to primary or election during the hours of 9:00 am through 4 pm; provided, however, that in primaries and elections in which there are no federal or state candidates on the ballot, no Saturday voting hours shall be required. Code Section 21-2-385(d)(1).

What is Absentee Voting?

Absentee voting is a way to vote in the days prior to any election day by either applying in person to vote in the Election Office or by requesting an absentee ballot via the mail. It is no longer necessary to state an excuse in order to receive an absentee ballot.

How do I apply for an absentee ballot?

You may request an absentee ballot as early as 180 days before an election. Absentee ballots must be received by the county registrar's office by 7:00 pm on Election Day. No absentee ballots are issued on the day before or the day of an election. The application must be in writing and must contain the address to which the ballot is to be mailed, sufficient information to identify you as a voter, and the election in which you wish to vote. If you are physically disabled or living temporarily outside your county of residence, a close relative may apply for an absentee ballot for you.

Applications for absentee ballots by uniformed or overseas voters (pursuant to the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act) can be accepted more than 180 days prior to a primary or election in which a Federal candidate appears on the ballot as well as for any runoffs resulting there from, including presidential preference primaries. This application is valid for two general elections. It is no longer necessary to state an excuse in order to receive an absentee ballot via mail; however, an excuse is still necessary to vote absentee in person.
